For a Day Foundation, a 501(C)3 organization formerly operated as Queen for a Day, is committed to creating emotionally therapeutic experiences for children battling cancer and other chronic illnesses. The program is known for providing the children and their families with a joyful and much needed diversion from the strain of chronic treatment. Our mission is simple: bring a smile to a child’s face; even if that child has not smiled in weeks. We use role models, make believe, and play therapy to give each child the opportunity to imagine and live out a fantasy while experiencing a moment of the childhood they all deserve. The For a Day Foundation is a national non-profit organization with chapters throughout the United States. The Atlanta chapter does programming throughout the Atlanta area at both Ronald McDonald House locations and other children’s organizations throughout the area. We provide many different programs for the kids and are always looking for new organizations to introduce our programming to!
Queen For a Day is our flagship program and this is the program that started all the fun! This unique program provides make-overs, manicures, face painting, temporary tattoo, and boas & tiaras to the kids. They also receive a photo to commemorate their day in their rhinestone tiara and feather boa. There is coronation station where different title holders from around the Georgia community come to crown the girls. The children also have a craft that usually consists of decorating a picture frame to keep the photos they take that day safe. Many titleholders from different pageants come to visit the children and help pamper them. This event focuses on feeling good, rather than only looking good and we put the pampering/quality time before the lipstick in many cases. The program helps build the self-esteem of the kids as they battle their illness.
Superhero for a Day is a program that we work very closely with Dekalb Fire and Rescue and the Dekalb Police Department to create. The program centers on the ideSupeas of bravery and courage. At the event, the children go through different stations designed to bring out the creative side of the kids. We have a caricature artist (Vincent Wolf) that helps the kids create their very own superhero avatar. After the avatar is created (as a piece of caricature art that the kids keep), the kids are sent to many stations which help them live out their day as the Superhero that they created with Vincent. There is a mask creating station, a face painting station, a temporary tattoo station, an obstacle course, and cookie creations. At this event there is a superhero cape and mask given to each child to turn the child into their very own real life superhero. The kids get to meet local superheros (firefighters and police) and are given fire hats and badges. Usually, the kids get to tour the police cars and fire trucks that the heroes bring with them! Also, there has been a time or two where Superman or a friend of his might make an appearance…We watch the children build up their confidence as they hang with the different heroes…it is magical watching a child look up to a firefighter and then having the same firefighter lift the child up into the fire truck so that the child can feel like they are invincible!
Winter Wonderland for a Day is a unique program that only occurs in Atlanta! We turn any room into a snowflake Winter Wonderland extravaganza. We offer Holiday Karaoke, Holiday cookie decorating, ornament crafts and other holiday crafts and many holiday treats. Santa Michael and Mrs. Clause make an appearance, which always steals the show. This is a time for the kids to sit on Santa’s lap and hang out with Santa, which may not have been possible otherwise. Santa spends time with each and every child at the event and each family can get the much needed Santa family photo as well. Also, with the help of the Atlanta community and countless toy drives, we are lucky enough to shower the kids with holiday gifts provided completely on donations. The program is the ideal Holiday party for the kids and the goal is to provide the most joy possible during a time that would not usually be filled with smiles in a hospital.
Our newest program is called Story Time For a Night. We are lucky to be joining forces with Buddy Blankets to create gift baskets for the kids that will be delivered to the children in the evening once a month and are accompanied with a very fun program. The gift baskets have fleece blankets, a notepad and pen, a book, and an invitiaton to the next For a Day Foundation event happening in the future. The kids are read a “bedtime” story and many times the characters in the stories come to life and make an appearance at the program! We also have a pillow decorating activity so that the children can create their own pillowcase and make their stay at the hospital or Ronald McDonald House as comfy as possible. The kids also can have milk and cookies as they enjoy story time. You never know which characters will come to life during this program which always makes this an exciting night and a great way for the kids to relax after their long day…
Our goal is to provide as much programming as possible for these kids. As the Atlanta programming has increased over the past few years, we have noticed that the kids actually looks forward to the days spent with us. They grow relationships with the volunteers and look up to them as role models. Also, it gives the parents and siblings a chance to either join in with the fun or escape for a few hour knowing that their children are being well taken care of. Stay tuned, we will be adding one or two new programs in 2015!
